Real Results. Trusted by 291,537 Students Across the Globe.

When Pat Murray saw that the traditional classroom wasn’t helping all his students succeed, he set out to create a better way. He knew that many children simply needed lessons explained in a calm, clear, and structured way, without the pressure or confusion that often comes with a busy classroom.

That simple idea became MathsOnline.

Today, the program has helped struggling learners find confidence, capable students move ahead at their own pace, and families take the stress out of homework time. Parents have told us it has made a real difference, not just in marks, but in mindset.

The Story Behind MathsOnline

You’ll find MathsOnline (in varying names and forms) in 7 countries, 1300+ schools and 18,000+ homes across the globe. But our journey started in just ONE classroom…

1989

Our co-founder Pat Murray started teaching high school maths at the age of 20! Newly married and working hard to get ahead, Pat also did after-hours tutoring. Safe to say, maths education became a huge part of his life.

1997

Realizing that he could be doing more to support his students, Pat started creating computer video lessons to use with his tutoring students. He teamed up with his software developer brother Steve Murray, who was then producing sophisticated Treasury software for large financial institutions. Thus the two brothers and co-founders took the first steps on the journey which would in time become MathsOnline.

1998-2000

Two tutoring centers were established (with a business partner) where students had exclusive access to the newly created and innovative maths teaching software. Due to continued requests by both students and their parents, Pat and Steve decided to further develop the program into a stand-alone CD-ROM format. This way, many more families could benefit from the program, not just families which lived close to where we were operating the tutoring centers.

2001

The ongoing and remarkable success of students using the maths program in both the centers and in school pilot schemes, led to it being featured several times on national TV in Australia. And vast numbers of new students across the country were quick to jump on board to get their own copies of the CD-ROM program — at just a fraction of the cost that many were already spending on private
maths tutoring.

2002 - 2004

The decision was made to close the tutoring centers, and to concentrate efforts fully on developing the software program. And since the world wide web (the internet) was becoming a pretty big thing, it made a lot of sense — to us at least — to try and figure out a way to stream our videos online. Not an easy task given that most homes only had dial-up internet in those days!

2005-2006

As true internet pioneers in the education space, we launched MathsOnline in Australia – one of the world’s first online tutoring programs for students. Families around the country could now get help for their kids by streaming on-demand lessons direct to their homes. Seems so obvious now — it wasn’t way back then! It was also the first time the program left the shores of Australia, and hit the homes of students in the UK — a big moment for the company and the start of the next chapter
of growth.

2007-2008

McDonald’s Australia approached us to provide MathsOnline as a benefit to their school-aged crew members. This initiative proved to be an outstanding success and as a direct result…

2009

A 3-year deal with McDonald’s was signed to provide MathsOnline for free to all Australian high school students and schools. McDonald’s invested heavily in this world-first initiative and it still remains to date one of the most remarkable positive contributions by a private company to maths education ever seen.

2010-2011

MathsOnline expanded into New Zealand schools and homes, and we saw further proof of just how universally helpful this simple and practical maths tutoring program could be for everyone — not just for the Aussie and UK kids! Today our MathsBuddy program is in 360+ schools, with tens of thousands of kids using it at home across all parts of
New Zealand.

2012

The successful 3-year partnership with McDonald’s Australia concludes. The number of students currently using MathsOnline as their online tutor continues to grow, and the program is now also used in schools and homes in South Africa and Kenya.

2013

In 2013, we hit the shores of the USA, launching CTCMath with much success. This tailored version of MathsOnline was designed specifically for homeschooling families. Today, more than 13,800 homeschooling families depend on MathsOnline for their kids’ education.

2014-2019

MathsOnline continued to grow globally, with schools and homes in countries around the world taking advantage of its simple, yet powerful teaching and reporting capabilities. Winning multiple awards, most notably in the USA and UK, Pat’s teaching style combined with Steve’s innovative software ensured kids got the best possible instruction and support to help them uncover their potential to learn and love maths.

2020-2021

Covid hit, and MathsOnline became an essential resource for so many parents stuck at home and desperate for more support with their kid’s maths education. Many more schools relied on MathsOnline to support their students’ learning when they couldn’t do so in the classroom. Thankfully, that’s exactly what MathsOnline is designed for, and hundreds of thousands of students were able to maintain and even improve their results despite the incredible difficulties and disruptions.

2022-2023

After the challenges of extended lock-downs and the on-going difficulties that our kids have had to face, we look to produce even more effective tools and resources to help them continue to succeed.

Why Families Love MathsOnline

Making maths accessible and enjoyable

I signed my children up for MathsOnline as part of their home education programme. All three were struggling with maths, and I found it difficult to help them since it’s been years since I last worked with formal maths. MathsOnline provides clear, easy-to-understand lessons that make the work more manageable and tailored to their level. I’m so pleased I signed up and maths is no longer a dreaded subject but one that has become accessible and enjoyable for all of them. Thank you! I highly recommend it.

Effective, independent maths learning with strong foundational support

I have two children using MathsOnline, one in KS2 and one preparing for GCSEs. It has been an excellent resource both as a stand-alone programme for home educators and as a supplement for school students. For many in school, it’s a lifesaver, clarifying topics that have always been a bit murky.

In my experience, MathsOnline is money well spent.

Independent learning

A fantastic resource! It allows my children to learn independently and methodically, while we can be confident they are being taught the correct methods. The videos are engaging, clearly explained, and just the right length to keep their attention. Afterwards, they answer questions pitched at the perfect level, and we can easily track their progress. I highly recommend this resource to anyone looking to help their children advance in maths.
